Why is GST Registration for Business Required?

Taxpayers register themselves for GST through the GST registration process. When a business successfully registers, a unique registration number known as the GSTIN(Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is given to them. After the taxpayer register, the federal government assigns them a 15-digit number.

If you conduct business in more than one state, you must complete a separate registration for each state in which you do business.

Now, you must wonder if GST registration is for all companies or a few.

Let's examine the online GST registration process in detail.

What is GST Registration?

Under Good and Service Tax (GST), all businesses must register as regular taxable persons if their annual revenue is more than the amount of Rs. 40 lakh, Rs. 20 lakh, or Rs. 10 lakh, as relevant. It is known as GST registration for business.

What is a GST Identification Number or GSTIN?

In each state where they conduct business, each taxpayer is given a PAN-based 15-digit Goods and Services Taxpayer Identification Number (GSTIN). It is acquired through the GST registration procedure. A distinct GSTIN is given to the company when the GST officer has reviewed and approved the GST registration application.

Who should register for GST?

All the businesses supplying goods whose turnover exceeds INR 40 lakh in one financial year are required to register as normal taxable persons. However, the maximum amount is INR 10 lakh if you incorporate a business in the northeastern states, J&K, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

The maximum annual turnover for service providers is INR 20 lakh or INR 10 lakh in states that fall under a specific category.

Also, the following list of companies must register for GST regardless of their annual revenue:

  • Normal Taxpayer/input service distributor (ISD)
  • Non-resident taxpaying person
  • Supplier of goods and services from another country
  • Supplier of products via an online store
  • Any service provider
  • Subject to the inverted charge mechanism and required to pay tax
  • Online data access or retrieval service provider
  • TDS/TCS deductor

Why is GST Registration for Business necessary?

There are several reasons why GST Registration for business is necessary, some of which are covered below:

Unified taxation:

Since there is no separate tax, the GST lessens the tax burden. By abandoning the tax-on-tax idea, the government unified all the indirect taxes like Service Tax, excise duty, VAT, etc., leading to immediate cost reductions for small and medium-sized firms.

GST Business Loan:

One of the main advantages of having a GST registration for business is this. Holders of a GSTIN can borrow money without putting up any collateral to expand their businesses. But before you apply for any loan, we advise you to assess your company's financial standing and your projected Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs).

Affordable interstate transport:

With the implementation of the GST, company owners no longer have to spend a fortune transporting their products over state lines. Small businesses can easily increase their footprint without worrying about expensive transportation costs with better management and fewer checkpoints.

The composite scheme advantage:

Under the composite scheme, companies with annual sales of up to 75 lakh rupees can pay tax at a flat rate of 1% to 5%. This maximum was previously 1.5 crores every year. However, it was later reduced to 75,000. Only small firms that meet particular requirements are eligible for this programme.

Single registration:

Since GST has eliminated several other taxes, including excise duty, VAT, CST, and service tax, one only need GST Registration, as GST replaces all other taxes.
